M-House, Author's House between Nature and Design

Location

Located in a rural landscape marked by traditional and natural elements typical of the region, this property benefits from excellent sun exposure and also has a natural watercourse that runs through the entire area surrounding the house!

The mountain in the background makes up a picturesque setting of great scenic beauty and cultural value, where rural life and traditions remain alive and authentic.

Design and Architecture

The irrigation tank and the walnut tree were the elements chosen by architects José Mateus and Nuno Mateus, from the ARX Portugal studio, as the starting point for the design of the house, which was awarded the 2008 Mafra Municipal Prize in the New Construction category.

The project establishes an intimate relationship with the ground plan, transforming the house into the very ground on which you walk. Throughout the volume of the house, patios are "excavated", creating quiet and peaceful spaces.

The bedroom area is served by an austere corridor, the ends of which reveal contrasting realities: to the north, it opens onto a low, contained and intimate courtyard; at the opposite end, it reveals a landscape of great depth, with the walnut tree in the foreground and the mountain on the horizon.

The Piano

The W. Hoffmann piano in the house is a true testament to the excellence of European construction, offering a unique, expressive, dynamic and richly textured sound.
